The University of San Diego Rugby Football Club was founded in 1980 by Tim Kleier and Johnny Purcell. The club won the Southern California Rugby Football Union Collegiate Division II in 1991, 1993, and 1994. The club was moved up to Division I in 1995 and made the Pacific Coast Playoffs in 1995 and 1996. Over the years USD has produced 79 SCRFU Griffins All-Stars, 24 Pacific Coast Grizzlies, 6 Collegiate All-Americans, and 1 United States National Team member.
